Health inspections: 5 restaurants from West Palm to Boca Raton closed temporarily

Forty-nine restaurants in Palm Beach County failed to meet health and safety standards last week, resulting in 44 follow-up inspections and five temporary closures.

In Palm Beach County, Florida's Department of Business and Professional Regulation reported 840 violations during 216 recent restaurant inspections. Inspectors labeled 278 violations as high priority, 244 violations as intermediate priority and 318 violations as basic priority.

Seventeen restaurants in Palm Beach County violated pest standards. Inspectors found 29 restaurants did not follow good handwashing and hygienic practices. The department also handed out 86 violations in the county for food protection and cross-contamination.

Inspectors in Palm Beach County found 68 restaurants with two or more high-priority violations and 78 restaurants with five or more total violations.

Palm Beach County restaurants temporarily closed

In Boca Raton:

  • Boca Bagel Bar, 4251 N. Federal Highway, was closed Sept. 22 after inspectors reported three high-priority violations and two basic violations. The eatery made the necessary corrections and reopened at 9 a.m. the next day. The manager said they did a deep cleaning the night after they were closed and had their pest control service come out.

  • China Café, 11419 W. Palmetto Park Road, was closed Sept. 19 after inspectors reported six high-priority violations, two intermediate-priority violations and 10 basic violations. The restaurant made the necessary corrections and reopened four days later. No comment.

  • Punjab Indian Restaurant, 1801 N. Federal Highway, was closed Sept. 21 after inspectors reported three high-priority violations and two basic violations. The eatery quickly made the necessary corrections and reopened the same day.

In Lake Worth:

  • Mariscos El Oceano, 23 S. Dixie Highway, was closed Sept. 22 after inspectors reported three high-priority violations, three intermediate-priority violations and one basic violation. The eatery made the necessary corrrections and reopened on Monday.

In West Palm Beach:

  • Griot Carribean Take Out LLC, 1558 Palm Beach Lakes Blvd., was closed Sept. 22 after inspectors reported six high-priority violations, one intermediate-priority violation and one basic violation. The restaurant corrected all the violations and reopened the next day. The manager said the closure was the result of a new cleaning crew that has since been brought up to speed.

In West Palm Beach:

  • El Camino, 700 S. Rosemary Ave., was cited Sept. 23 with one pest violation among 10 total violations.

  • Griot Carribean Take Out LLC, 1558 Palm Beach Lakes Blvd., was cited Sept. 22 with two pest violations among eight total violations.

  • India Grill And Bar, 650 Royal Palm Beach Blvd., was cited Sept. 19 with two pest violations among 14 total violations and on Sept. 20 with two pest violations among seven total violations.

  • Montezuma Restaurant, 5607 S. Dixie Highway, was cited Sept. 21 with one pest violation among nine total violations.

  • Taqueria El Sinaloence, 502 S. Military Trail, was cited Sept. 20 with one pest violation among seven total violations.

Inspections are reported through the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation, which says each inspection is a snapshot and restaurants could have more or fewer violations on other days. High-priority violations are those that could cause food poisoning or injury, such as problems with cooking, cooling and handwashing. Intermediate violations are those that could lead to risk factors that could contribute to food poisoning or injury, such as problems with personnel training. Basic violations are those that violate best practices.
