HBO to air documentary about friendship of Bill Belichick and Nick Saban
The two best coaches in recent football memory have a significant history, and now it will be told in an upcoming documentary.
HBO announced Tuesday that it will air “Belichick & Saban: The Art of Coaching,” a 90-minute film on the relationship between Bill Belichick and Nick Saban, on Dec. 10. The film is a joint project between HBO Sports and NFL Films, and a teaser was released on Tuesday.

Here’s a taste of what we can expect:
Belichick, the six-time Super Bowl-winning coach of the New England Patriots, and Saban, a winner of six national championships (one at LSU, five at Alabama), have known each other since 1982. That’s when the two were assistants at Navy on the coaching staff of Steve Belichick, Bill’s father. And a decade later when Belichick became head coach of the Cleveland Browns, he hired Saban to run his defense.

They haven’t coached together since their time with the Browns, but Belichick and Saban have remained close friends. The documentary explores a friendship that has spanned nearly 40 years and includes interviews with an array of football figures they have crossed paths with over the years, including Ozzie Newsome, Kirby Smart and Josh McDaniels.

Belichick and Saban grant unprecedented camera access to their annual coaching retreat, where they share a multi-layered conversation about their interwoven history, admiration, coaching philosophies and more. The intimate portrait invites viewers to examine firsthand their blueprints for organizational success, in what can only be described as a literal “meeting of the minds.”
Combined with one-on-one interviews and extensive inside access captured over the past three decades, Belichick & Saban: The Art of Coaching includes topics never publicly broached before, including their fathers’ respective influences on their careers, their tenures with the Cleveland Browns organization in the 1990s, and how they connect with the newest generation of players.
A full trailer for the documentary will air on HBO on Tuesday night before the season finale of Hard Knocks.
