The emotionally charged season finale of HBO’s Euphoria left us with some major questions: Where does Rue and Jules’s relationship stand after that train scene? Are Nate and Maddie going to finally call it quits, recognizing the toxicity inherent in their relationship? Are Kat and Ethan on the road to true love? And what’s going to happen to Fezco?!
Happily, there will be a second season of the show, which HBO confirmed via social media in July. To get us through the waiting period, the network dropped a key component of Rue’s costume in its online merch shop, as noted by HelloGiggles. That’s right, fans: You too can own Rue’s maroon hoodie, which rings in at $44.95 and prominently features the Euphoria logo on the left chest.
Rue’s maroon hoodie is a source of safety and comfort for her character’s tumultuous existence; in the season finale, its origin story is finally and gut-wrenchingly revealed. In a flashback, when Rue’s father passes away from cancer in the family’s home, the hoodie is left behind on his bed. As Rue’s grieving mother sits in shock at the loss, Rue tentatively approaches the bed, picks up the sweatshirt, and clutches it to her chest, breathing in the last memories of her beloved father. She then puts it on and pulls the hood over her head, settling in to what ultimately becomes her security blanket, courtesy of her late father. Finally understanding why Rue dresses, as Jules describes it, “like Seth Rogen, although you make it cute sometimes,” hit us with all the feels.
Eagle-eyed viewers have likely noticed that Rue’s dad is wearing the hoodie in the hospital scene when Rue is born, and as each character’s costume and makeup choices are carefully and thoughtfully constructed, we knew there had to be more to the hoodie’s backstory. Doniella Davy, head makeup artist for the show, has described burgundy as Rue’s “power color,” so that even in scenes when she isn’t donning the hoodie, viewers have the sense that it’s still with her.
The hoodie is such an iconic part of Rue’s character that even Zendaya had a hard time letting go after the season wrapped. She tweeted an image of herself in the hoodie, captioning the tweet, “Wore Rue’s hoody today, haven’t worn or washed it since we wrapped. Safe to say I’m deep in my feels lol.” As are we, Z. As are we.
