Hawks forward DeAndre Bembry arrested for driving 128 mph in a 55 mph zone
Atlanta Hawks forward DeAndre’ Bembry was arrested early Friday after police say they clocked him driving 128 miles per hour in a 55 mph zone.
According to Atlanta NBA affiliate WXIA-TV, Bembry, 23, was driving a purple Dodge Charger on Interstate 85 near Buford Highway just after midnight on Friday morning — and reportedly doing so 73 mph over the posted speed limit. When police caught up to him, they stopped him “without incident and arrested [him] on charges of reckless driving and speeding,” Atlanta police Officer Donald Hannah told the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
“We are aware of an incident involving DeAndre’ Bembry earlier this morning,” the Hawks said Friday morning in a team statement. “We are still gathering information as it pertains to the situation, and out of respect for the legal process, we will have no further comment at this time.”
The Hawks selected Bembry, a 6-foot-6 swingman who won Atlantic-10 Player of the Year honors as a junior at St. Joseph’s, with the 21st overall pick in the 2016 NBA draft. After playing sparingly as a rookie on a Hawks squad that made its 10th consecutive playoff appearance, he entered this season marked for a larger role on a team just beginning a tail-to-tip rebuild following the exits of Paul Millsap and Dwight Howard.
Injuries have scuttled Bembry’s sophomore year, though, with a fractured right wrist (suffered during Atlanta’s season opener) sidelining him for a month and groin injuries keeping him mostly on the shelf since late December. He’s averaging 4.8 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 17.3 minutes per game over 18 appearances this season, shooting 37.5 percent from the field, 35 percent from 3-point range and 66.7 percent from the foul line.
