Harry Styles Takes Sailor Style to Whimsical New Heights in His New Video

Harry Styles’s wardrobe has always skewed towards the whimsical: we all know he’s unafraid of a boldly printed tropical shirt, or a nice little lift thanks to a pair of heeled boots. But in his new video for “Adore You”—the latest single from his upcoming sophomore solo album Fine Line—Styles’s wardrobe is more out to sea than ever before, so to speak. The Dave Meyers-directed short, which Rosalía narrates, tells the epic story of a boy who feels out of place on the isolated, gloomy (fictional) island of Eroda that he lives on. It’s a small, superstitious fishing village where no one ever smiles, and men wear single gold earrings for good luck. Styles, though, is the sole golden boy of the isle—the only one who walks around with a blindingly bright grin.

Throughout the video, Styles’s encroaching melancholia is mitigated by a gold-dappled fish that he stumbles across. As time goes on (and the fish grows bigger and bigger), Styles reveals more pieces from his nautical wardrobe, all of which were compiled by his trusty stylist Harry Lambert. There’s plenty of Gucci, of course, including a custom denim suit by the Italian house, that Styles pairs with a cream color shirt that peeks out from underneath. At one point, Styles wears a vintage denim pageboy cap with a brown Bode jumpsuit, as he settles down along a high point on the jagged coastline for a scenic picnic with his fishy friend. Finally, at the very end of the clip, Styles places his pet fish back into the ocean, before setting sail away from the folkloric island in a Gucci check shirt, a mismatched printed tie, and some suspended trousers. While the narrative could have been plucked from an ancient epic, with the help of some designer threads, Styles brings a perfectly of-the-moment touch to the classic sailor’s uniform.
