Harry Styles Seemed To Address The Controversy Around His "People Like Me" Grammys Speech
OK, so you probably heard about the backlash Harry Styles got over his Grammys speech last week.
He was accepting the award for Album of the Year when he made a comment about how "this doesn’t happen to people like me very often" — which sparked a huge backlash and debate on white privilege given that white cis men, like Harry, have historically won the award the most.
did harry styles just say “this doesn’t happen to people like me very often” when winning album of the year.. like you’re a straight cis white guy lol
harry styles, a WHITE MAN, standing up on the grammy stage with the aoty award in his hands talking about “this doesn’t happen to people like me” is so sinister like sir??? i need you to be so fcking fr it only ever happens to “people like you”
harry styles really just said “this doesn’t happen to people like me very often” like what #Grammys
"This doesn't happen to people like me very often" - Harry Styles winning AOTY at the Grammys 2023A black woman hasn't won in over 20 years and a Hip Hop artist hasn't won in 19 years. A white man won in 2015.
Well, now, it appears Harry has addressed the backlash. While accepting the Artist of the Year honor at last night's BRIT Awards, he said he was "grateful" for the award and that he understood his privilege well.
"I'm really, really grateful for this, and I'm very aware of my privilege up here tonight," he shared in his speech, before shouting out snubbed artists like Rina Sawayama, Charli XCX, Mabel, Florence + the Machine, and Becky Hill.
This also seemed to be his way of addressing the backlash the BRIT Awards got after failing to nominate any female artists in the Artist of the Year category.
