These are the Hardest Colleges in America to Get Into

More people are receiving higher education than ever before; enrollment for 18-24 year olds went up to 40 percent in 2017. And with more than 5,300 colleges just in the United States, students have a lot to choose from.

College admissions counselors certainly have plenty to choose from, too. Partially because of the influx of students, getting into college is now more competitive than ever before—particularly for students who dream of attending the likes of Harvard or Stanford, where just 5 percent of applicants are admitted into the university.

Harvard in particular was recently named America's most difficult school to get into for the third year in a row, according to an updated ranking from the educational institution data company Niche. Its latest ranking of the hardest colleges to get into in America is "based on acceptance rates and SAT/ACT test scores, using data from the U.S. Department of Education."

The ranking compared more than 1,600 colleges and universities in the United States. Here are the top 10:
