Netflix fans, listen up as our favourite French fugitive, Assane Diop, is back for more in season three of Lupin.

The new season follows Assane (Omar Sy), a professional thief, as he goes into hiding from the authorities and has to decide whether he and his family should stay in Paris, France or start a brand new life.

So, what does Assane decide? Does he evade capture? Plus, is that who we think it is in the final scene? Here is the ending of Lupin season three explained.

Mariama is kidnapped

Assane has faked his own death to protect the privacy of his ex-wife, Claire, and their son, Raoul, when he receives a call from his mother, Mariama, who he hasn't seen since he was a child.

Mariama says she's been kidnapped by criminals who want the Black Pearl — the only item that Assane has tried and failed to steal — as ransom.

Then, we learn that Jean-Luc Keller, Assane’s old boxing coach, is Mariama's kidnapper and did so out of revenge for his time spent in prison after he and Assane previously committed a robbery gone wrong.

Benjamin is arrested

When trying to outsmart Mariana's kidnappers, Assane's childhood friend, Benjamin is arrested. So, Assane surprises Detective Guedira and says he will let him arrest him if Benjamin is freed from prison. True friendship!

Keller goes after Claire

Mariam escapes, but soon, Keller decides to go after Claire and Raoul instead. They are able to evade capture and Assane brings them and Raoul to his safe house, where they meet Mariama for the first time and discuss their future together as a family.

Assane then plots with Keller’s girlfriend and second-in-command, Manon, to set Keller up and they lure him to his arrest.

Assane goes to prison

As previously agreed, Detective Guedira arrests Assane and Benjamin is freed.

Claire, Mariama and Raoul expect to meet Assane at a train station so they can all leave Paris to start afresh elsewhere, but Benjamin shows up instead with a letter from Assane, where he explains his actions and says that he loves her Claire.

"It’s not the ending we hoped for, but you are free," he writes as he goes to prison. Here, he settles in to life as an inmate but soon, everything is turned upside down.

Hubert returns

While in his cell, a guard gives Assane an envelope from a fellow inmate who stays next-door. Inside is a photo of Assane as a teenager holding the Arsène Lupin book, Cagliostro’s Revenge.

We then learn it was sent by none other than Hubert Pellegrini, who Assane had arrested for the framing and imprisoning of his father which eventually lead to his suicide. As if!

The contents of the envelope suggest that Hubert he knows about Assane's tricks, and that Mariama might not be who we think she is.
