It's the end of an era. The emotional friendship drama Firefly Lane has officially come to an end, with the final episode airing on Netflix today.

Starring Katherine Heigl (Suits, Doubt) and Sarah Chalke (Scrubs, How I Met Your Mother), the series spans an entire lifetime 0f characters Tully (Heigl) and Kate (Chalke)'s 30-year tumultuous friendship.

As the series come to an end with part two of its second season, we're going to need some tissues to get through it.

Sarah Chalke confirmed that fans will "need some", during an interview with Entertainment Weekly. "Season 1 created a lot of questions and then season 2, part 1 answered those, and now there's a lot more questions and all of those will be answered in the second half. But there's also lots of levity," she said.

"One thing I love about the show is that there's a balance between the heavy stuff and then there's some humour woven in there, which I think is what you need so that you can actually exhale."

Here's everything you need to know about Firefly Lane's second, and final, season – including details of how it all ends. Warning: spoilers ahead.

What are the plot highlights of Firefly Lane season 2 part 2?

The part one finale saw Tully leave for a new job in Antarctica just as Kate learns she has a rare form of stage three breast cancer.

Throughout part two, we see Kate dealing with her diagnosis, writing her novel (also called Firefly Lane). Tully also wrestles with her feelings for Danny, a relationship that has had many ups and downs over the series. Will they find their happy ending? Spoiler: yes, after some struggle, they will.

At the end of part one, we saw a wedding teased, and it's revealed in part two, that the wedding is in fact Marah's wedding in 2016.

Sadly, Kate does succumb to her cancer, with it going into remission initially but then returning and spreading to the rest of her body, including her brain. But not before she manages to prepare some beautiful gestures for her loved ones.

The final episode sees the remaining characters attend Kate's funeral, and when Tully feels unsure she can go through with it, Johnny presents her with a box that Kate had left with him to give Tully.

It contains her novel – which is also meant to be passed down to Kate's daughter Marah, eventually – a joint, an autographed photo of David Cassidy and an iPod including a Firefly Lane playlist.

In an interview with Deadline, Chalke admitted that although she'd read the book and knew where things were going, she'd cried reading the final script. "It was really beautifully written," she said. "Obviously, I had some trepidation about shooting it. It was quite an emotional day."

Thankfully it's not all doom and gloom, as after 20 years of "will they, won't they" Tully and Danny finally said "I love you" to each other.

Will there be a Firefly Lane season 3?

Netflix has unfortunately confirmed that season 2 is Firefly Lane's final season.

The show is based on Kristin Hannah's book of the same name, which ends with Kate's cancer diagnosis and eventual death. So it looks like the TV series will be honouring the book's ending, and won't be continuing with the story with a third season.

Guess we'll just have to go back and rewatch from season one then.
