Earlier this week, designer Anifa Mvuemba debuted Hanifa's 2022 collection to a carefully curated crowd of fellow editors, stylists, and creatives with a special VIP viewing at The Standard Highline in New York City. Rather than opting for a traditional runway presentation, the brand (with an introduction from its designer) showcased a sexy and sleek, pre-recorded presentation — a fashion film if you will — that showed off an impressive array of punchy two piece sets, voluminous gowns, and sexy cut out skirts with barely-there bra tops. Mvuemba made a brief speech —while clad in a metallic purple version of the new Kelly Balloon dress from the latest collection — with a clear message for her intent behind her latest release: "Don't play with me anymore," she quipped to the crowd, followed by an energetic applause.
With each model that glided across the screen, cheers followed. Mvuemba's designs have a way of invigorating the very crowd she designs for — passionate, proud, and ambitious women who gravitate toward her clothes because they are clothes that are made to help women feel good. Who wouldn't feel their absolutely best — or even their sexiest or their most playfully coy — while jetting around the city in a citrus green co-ord or a slinky red, curve caressing evening gown? Hanifa's SS22 offering proves how much she's grown as a designer in such a little amount of time since her breakout virtual fashion show back in 2020 (though she's been designing for over a decade now). Her line also serves as a master class in true size inclusivity; one that doesn't require flashy press releases or calculated marketing tactics to prove they're doing the work of designing for all women. Models of all sizes graced the runway film with their presence, proving that Mvuemba sees beyond the limited scope of who gets to feel beautiful in fashion — and that authenticity will always prevail.
