Did you enter the Hamilton lottery a million times for tickets on Broadway—or in one of the many cities visited by the touring company—only to find yourself with some version of a “better luck next time” message? Well, your days of waiting to see Lin-Manuel Miranda’s mega-hit musical are over.
The show—complete with the original Broadway cast, including Miranda, Daveed Diggs, Jonathan Groff, and Leslie Odom Jr.—is coming to Disney+ on July 3. Hamilton was originally supposed to debut in movie theaters in October 2021, but that date was moved due to the coronavirus pandemic. Now Disney+ has decided to move up the release date and start streaming the show this summer.
They also just released a trailer, and hearing the music again has us all very excited.
Hamilton tells the story of Alexander Hamilton, one of America’s founding fathers, through a modern lens with Miranda in the title role. He also wrote the lyrics, music, and book for the show, which debuted on Broadway on January 20, 2015, and blended genres like hip-hop into the world of musical theater. It quickly became a pop culture phenomenon and one of the hardest tickets to get access to in New York. Celebrities and other theater-goers took to posting their Playbills on social media as a show of clout. The show was nominated for 16 Tonys and won 11, including best musical, best performance by a leading actor (for Odom) and by a featured actor (for Diggs), best costume design, and best direction. The show also won high praise for the diversity of its cast.
The cast of Hamilton recently reunited during the pandemic for an appearance on John Krasinski’s web series, Some Good News, where they surprised a nine-year-old superfan who, do to the coronavirus pandemic, had to miss out on seeing the show when it came to her hometown.
Now the magic of Hamilton will be available to anyone with a Disney+ subscription starting July 3.
