  • Halle Berry, 54, revealed she never skips vitamin C serum in her skincare routine.

  • “It brightens our skin, it keeps us from getting splotches. If you get a pimple, they go away a lot faster without leaving any marks. So a serum with vitamin C is key,” she said.

  • Vitamin C is a science-backed ingredient and comes in effective formulations at various price points.

For Halle Berry, the key to good skin is consistency—it’s the one rule she swears by. “Have a routine and be consistent with it,” she recently told Glamour. That’s why, no matter how many new beauty trends are thrown her way, there’s one skincare step she’ll never skip.

“The products that I use have evolved over the years as new technologies have been made available. But there is one product that has been a part of my skin care regime for as long as I can remember, and that is a serum with vitamin C,” the 54-year-old actress revealed. “It brightens our skin, it keeps us from getting splotches. If you get a pimple, they go away a lot faster without leaving any marks. So a serum with vitamin C is key.”

Berry is right—vitamin C does all of those things, and more. “Vitamin C helps produce collagen (which keeps skin firm and reduces the appearance of wrinkles), and protects skin from sun damage and dark spots,” Ranella Hirsch, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist practicing in Boston previously told Prevention.com. “Between these varied functions, the majority of folks can benefit from having vitamin C in their skincare routine.”

Vitamin C also acts as an antioxidant, meaning it helps fight against free radicals from the environment (a type of molecule that can cause skin damage). On top of that, it really does make skin glow.

Unfortunately, Berry didn’t reveal exactly which vitamin C serum she’s loving at the moment. But if you want to try incorporating it into your routine, we’ve rounded up tons of dermatologist-approved picks over the years, all with various formulations and price points.

For the best of the best, the SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic is a standout favorite among dermatologists. “This is far and away the best product and the one I recommend most frequently,” Dr. Hirsch told us. (The product packs 15% pure vitamin C, 1% vitamin E, and 0.5% ferulic acid, a combo that can boost the efficacy of vitamin C eightfold, research suggests.)

Dr. Hirsch has also recommended Drunk Elephant’s C-Firma Day Serum and Vichy LiftActiv’s Vitamin C Brightening Skin Corrector.

Joshua Zeichner, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist in New York City likes Neutrogena’s Rapid Tone Repair 20% Vitamin C Serum Capsules. The ultra-rich serum is packaged into single-dose biodegradable capsules, which helps maintain the potency and efficacy of the highly sensitive vitamin C inside.

While many attribute Berry’s flawless skin to genetics, she insists that she’s worked hard to earn her glow. “I have taken care of this skin since I was 13, morning and night, religiously,” she told Glamour. “I’ve had a program, I’ve been consistent, and I’ve never wavered. Even on my drunken nights when I’d stumble in the house in my early 20s, guess what? I’d be in the bathroom washing that face off, as drunk as I was! So, no, it’s consistency, and I’ve been doing it since I was 13.”
