Hair Love, the TV Series: Here’s Everything We Know

Hair Love, the animated short film about a Black father doing his daughter’s hair for the first time, has become beloved by fans around the world. It’s also become a critical darling, taking home an Academy Award earlier this year, after starting as a Kickstarter back in 2017.

It was already a best-selling children’s book—and now the story of the Young family will continue as a television series on HBO Max.

“I am beyond excited to continue telling the story of Stephen, Angela, and Zuri and further explore the family dynamics of a young Black millennial family we established in our short film Hair Love as an animated series,” the film’s writer and director, Matthew A. Cherry, said in a statement to Entertainment Weekly. (He’ll also serve as the showrunner.) “Couldn’t ask for better partners in Sony Pictures Animation and HBO Max in helping us get Young Love out to the world.”

We don’t have many details yet, but here’s everything we know so far about the new Hair Love series.

The name: The show will be called Young Love, which references the family’s last name.

The premiere date: We’re not yet sure when the show will begin streaming.

There’s an audio book of the short film: If you want another way to consume Hair Love before the TV series drops, there’s now an audio book of the short film—narrated by Blue Ivy Carter.

The story: According to EW, the new show “will focus on millennial parents Stephen and Angela, daughter Zuri, and pet Rocky as they juggle their careers, marriage, parenthood, social issues, and multigenerational dynamics all while striving to make a better life for themselves.”

The cast: This too is up in the air at the moment. While Issa Rae voiced the mom in the original short, it’s not clear if she will return for the series. And Cherry is already on the lookout for Black voice actors.

The fan response: We may not have many details on the show, but it’s clear that people on social media are very excited about it.

This post will be updated as new details emerge
