Gypsy Rose Blanchard On Abusive Mother: ‘The Only Person I Needed Protection From Is Her’
Following the 2015 murder of Dee Dee Blanchard investigators determined Dee Dee Blanchard had suffered from a mental disorder frequently referred to as Munchausen syndrome by proxy. She’d spent more than two decades systematically abusing her daughter by convincing others, including doctors that Gypsy suffered a host of debilitating illnesses.

“Dee Dee had some books in the house — Leukemia For Dummies and different books like that, so she did her research,” says Rod Blanchard of his ex-wife. “She knew the terminology and she knew how to make Gypsy appear to have certain symptoms by giving her certain medications. She was pretty slick.”
Dr. Phil asks Gypsy, “What does that cause you to feel when you realize how viciously exploitative this woman was with you?”
“It just hurts ‘cause every time she told me that she loved me, that she was trying to protect me, and now I know the only person I needed protection from is her,” she responds.
Gypsy pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in connection with her mother’s death. She was sentenced to 10 years and is currently incarcerated at the Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri.
