Gwyneth Paltrow is Trying to Make Culottes Happen

Dear Gwyneth, what’s going on? Have you been so busy with Goop that you’ve abandoned all other pursuits? Namely, your style?

For years, we’ve looked up to you. In the ’90s, you were the epitome of minimalist chic. You were the reason we spent hours convincing our parents that slip dresses were in fact totally appropriate for high school dances. Your days with Brad were full of timeless looks that wouldn’t be out of place on a runway today.

Then you were the sexiest pregnant lady there ever was, and you single-handedly (OK, with a little help from Stella McCartney) ushered in the era of the jumpsuit. But lately, things have gone a little wonky. Speaking of jumpsuits, a silhouette you usually nail went all wrong when you tried a nude version by Elie Saab earlier this year.

And we should talk about your recent Oscars dress. You’re obviously into wearing pink on the red carpet and we can get behind that—you wore it the year you took home a gold statue for Shakespeare in Love and it probably holds a lot of great memories. You knocked it out of the park at the Golden Globes in that bright plunging Michael Kors gown, but you veered too far into Carrie Bradshaw’s lane for the Academy Awards. If Terrence Howard hadn’t suffered some kind of emotional break at the podium, your dress would’ve been the meme of choice the next day.

And now you’re trying to make culottes happen. We know you can do better than yesterday’s outfit at Jerry Seinfeld’s Inaugural Fatherhood Lunch for Baby Buggy. That white tube top paired with wide knee-length black shorts feels half-cater waiter, half-Britney Spears circa ‘Baby One More Time.’ Building a business, raising kids, and holding down a steady gig can’t be easy, and probably doesn’t leave much room for focusing on your outfit. Unless of course you’re Gwyneth, who’s built an empire on making all of that look easy. So step it up babe, you’re the one who set the expectations so high.
