Gwyneth Paltrow Spoke Out About Sexism in Hollywood at This Year's Goop Summit

This weekend New York City hosted Gwyneth Paltrow's "In Goop Health," summit for her wellness-focused brand, Goop. And this year, Paltrow's summit included a panel called "It's an Art," where Paltrow, along with Laura Linney, former Teen Vogue editor-in-chief Elaine Welteroth, Drew Barrymore, Chelsea Handler, and Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn, talked about what it means to be a woman in 2018. During the discussion, Paltrow opened up about the moment she realized just how embedded sexism was in Hollywood—and how she was encouraged to advocate for herself when it came to a pretty blatant case of pay disparity.

"I mean, it’s kind of incredible because when I was coming up in my early professional life there was just no buffering whatsoever around a young woman," Paltrow said, adding that the rules were "very different." "You just had to duck and weave your way around inappropriate things and inappropriate behavior that we saw. And I knew it felt wrong in my body to see certain things or be spoke to in a certain way, but I just thought that was the way things were."

She continues that it "never occurred" to her that what was happening was illegal—or how pervasive it was. "It’s funny because my father, who was in television, championed women and men of color. He had a whole mentoring program, so I kind of grew up that way and yet, still, I never understood in the whole sexual harassment realm, what was happening. And how long it was going on."

Paltrow then opened up about an experience she had on one unnamed film when she realized an actor who was "far behind" where Paltrow was in her career was getting paid the same as she was. "[My father] was outraged," she said. "It was like, 'Oh there’s an inequality here.' Nobody had ever said that to me until my dad explained it to me."

Paltrow has previously spoken about the sexual harassment she faced from Harvey Weinstein in the New York Times.
