Fitness YouTuber Cole Baker loves a fitness challenge. He previously attempted to do yoga everyday for 30 days to improve his flexibility, did the 2,000 rep Jump Rope challenge for 30 days, and Uncle Iroh's workout from Avatar. His latest fitness challenge, called The One Punch Man Challenge, is also inspired by a cartoon series.
The One Punch Man Challenge comes from the anime phenomenon One Punch Man. The series centers on Saitama, a character that undergoes "extreme physical training" (in reality, a fairly tame workout) and transcends all potential enemies, so powerful he can defeat anyone with a single blow. YouTubers Brandon William and Tyler Oliveira also previously did the challenge, and Baker decided to follow suit after one commenters dogged persistence in requesting the routine on every one of his videos.
The challenge consist of:
- 100 pushups
- 100 situps
- 100 squats
- 10 kilometer (6.21 mile) run
Unlike other participants, Baker's goal was to work through the reps as quickly as possible.
"The running is going to be the hardest part of this challenge," says Baker. "And supposedly this challenge makes you lose your hair."
He starts the challenge repping out pushups and situps, and after completing both, he is 7 minutes in. Next, he's on to the air squats, and after finishing those up (he's at 11:24), he takes off on his run.
"My legs feel like jello," he says as he starts.
He finishes, noting his mile average was 8:17, for a total of 51:32 for his 10k.
"I haven't ran for three weeks or so, so I'd say that's a pretty good time," says Baker.
His final time for the entire challenge is 1 hour, 3 minutes and 6 seconds (63:06).
"I really do feel like I could have ran a little bit faster, but not trying to make excuses, the hills were very tough," says Baker.
The camera goes dark, and comes back to Baker is in bed, waking up from a dream.
"I just had the craziest dream that I did the One Punch Man Challenge and I went bald," he says as he touches his scalp that is, indeed, bald.
