This Guy Did 100 Pushups Every Day for an Entire Year

YouTuber Jack Clancy recently came to the end of a year-long fitness experiment, in which he did 100 pushups every single day for 365 days, starting on June 15, 2019 and finishing on June 14, 2020. He was inspired to take on this challenge by YouTubers like Simple Man, James Whyte and Nick Bare, who have each documented their own experiences of doing 100 pushups per day for a whole year (or in Bare's case, a decade), and in his latest video, he shared the things he has learned in the last year—as well as the physical results.

"When I first started years ago, I couldn't do a pushup at all," he says. "I had to do knee pushups or other adjusted pushups to account for my lack of strength. With a bit of training and practice, I was able to do a few standard pushups, then a few more, then a few more, and when I started this challenge I was able to do 14 pushups on the first day. Over time, I was able to get that up to 36 in a row."

He also believes that doing the daily pushups helped him to build healthier habits elsewhere in his routine and generally contributed to him having a more consistently active life. "Getting that habit of wanting to exercise daily is a real game-changer," he says. "In my case, the habit of training every single day led to eating better and sleeping better."

By the end of the challenge, Jack had lost 17 pounds, built some muscle, and improved his strength and endurance. However, he adds that starting out with 100 pushups meant that the challenge was very difficult to begin with, and that it might have helped if he'd started at 50—and then as the year went on and he was able to do more pushups with ease, 100 became too easy, as there was no progression to the daily workouts. "You might be leaving some gains on the table," he says.

Additionally, Jack acknowledges that it's important to allow the body sufficient time to rest and recover between workouts in order to get the most out of the exercise and avoid risk of injury. "You might want to do 100 pushups every other day, to better suit your needs and abilities," he advises.
