Grocery store apologizes over shoplifting sign placement

British grocery chain Tesco is apologizing after the location of a “no shoplifting” sign angered some customers. The company has nearly 4,000 stores across the U.K. and Ireland . The issue stemmed from a viral tweet posted by a customer on Jan. 29 at a Tesco in London’s Kensington neighborhood. The chain says its sign was placed “in error” next to the feminine hygiene products. Many on social media said the sign was shaming people who might be unable to afford a medically essential product. Others drew attention to the fact that condoms are given out for free in the U.K. The country does charge a five percent sales tax on feminine hygiene products. Several British grocery chains — including Tesco — have done away with the “tampon tax”. in an effort to make the products more affordable
