At Sunday night's Golden Globes, Jane Fonda, 83, picked up the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award in a chic white suit that she'd worn before, complimented with modern, neutral make-up and gold drop down earrings. While her fashion sense is always on point, her hairstyle was arguably the pièce de résistance of her look.

It was at last year's Golden Globes ceremony, at which she (re-wore) a glamorous red Ellie Saab gown, that Fonda debuted her newly grey pixie haircut, after decades of dying it blonde. One year on, and although her hair is softer and longer, the grey has remained bleach free.

Let's be clear, going grey is not about giving up. Fonda is a prime example of how glamorous the dulcet tone can be. In fact, these days grey hair is considered cool by the fashion crowd and sought after by the youth.

On a practical note, going grey is much lower maintenance - especially now that hair salons are closed, a sentiment Fonda iterated on the Ellen DeGeneres show last week ahead of Sunday's awards ceremony.

"I tell you, I'm so happy I let it go grey," she said. "Enough already with so much time wasted, so much money spent, so many chemicals — I'm through with that."

Indeed it's not just Fonda that has embraced her grey hair, actresses Glenn Close and Jamie Lee Curtis also showed off stunning silver locks. Curtis even paired hers with glowy tanned skin and ample cleavage, a combination that wouldn't necessarily appear as classy if her hair was dyed to match the warm blonde of her twenties.

Going grey glamorously isn't completely without effort. Growing out your hair colour, whether that's blonde highlights or a dark tint, is only one part of the process.

Look closely at Fonda's grey hair and there are some subtle embellishes that make hers look stylish, healthy and, although this sounds counter intuitive, youthful.

Catwalk hair colourist, Josh Wood, explains "the trick to going grey is have your colourist add some contrast in tone. An easy way to do this is by having a lighter streaks close to the hair line, for example, which will add a focal point and lend some contrast.'

He adds, "Grey can look dull sometimes, so it's important to keep it bright by using blue and violet conditioners that will neutraslise brassiness and keep your grey looking sparkling."

The key to home maintenance, Wood says, is all about applying treatments as grey hairs are naturally more coarse in texture. "Straight or curly, the secret is to use deep conditioning masks to smooth the cuticle and make the hair surface appear as healthy as possible. They really do make all the difference."

Try Christophe Robin's Shade Variation Mask in Baby Blonde as the same violet tones that boost blonde colour fade work to intensify grey too.
