Well, it looks like this is it, Grey's Anatomy fans: We're officially getting a farewell episode for Dr. Alex Karev, and it's bound to be an especially heart-wrenching one.
Following the shocking announcement of Justin Chambers' exit from the show in January, many Grey's fans have been wondering for a while now how the show might write off his character, Dr. Alex Karev. But the show's dedicated viewers finally got answers: ABC will officially bid farewell to Alex Karev on Thursday, March 5, in a special episode titled "Leave a Light On" that will finally reveal the fate of the beloved character who has been on since the show's debut.
The show released the promotional trailer for the episode following the airing of episode 15. The emotional video featured old clips of Alex Karev through the past 15 years, accompanied by the appropriately heart-wrenching song "Say Something" by A Great Big World.
"After 16 seasons, we're saying goodbye to Dr. Alex Karev," read the caption on the show's official Instagram. "See how his story ends next Thursday on Grey's Anatomy."
Um, cue the tears! Unsurprisingly, Grey's fans did not react well to the emotional promo, already expressing their devastation over having to bid farewell to their favorite character — and even saying they were already "ugly crying" after watching the 30-second promo trailer.
"I truly don't think I can handle next weeks Grey's Anatomy," one fan wrote on Twitter. "I cried watching the 30 second preview of the saying goodbye to Alex. I refuse."
"The preview for next week made me tear up. I am not ready to say goodbye to Alex Karev," wrote another Twitter user.

Of course, amid the devastated reactions, many Grey's fans are also anxious to find out how the show is finally writing off Dr. Alex Karev — especially as a great number of them have been upset over the show's handling of Alex's storyline so far, even urging writers to "stop making a disgrace" of the character. Unfortunately, the recent episode did little to comfort these fans over the character's ultimate fate, as the show had Alex's wife Jo Karev (Camilla Luddington) reveal a major bombshell: Alex isn't in Iowa with his mother like the characters had believed (wait, what?).
“He left me — I think he did,” Jo says tearfully in the last moments of the Feb. 27 episode. “I think he woke up one day and felt the need to escape his life and me. I called his mom. He wasn’t there, he’d never been there. And I can’t breathe.”
Could this be a possible setup for Alex Karev's death? Some fans certainly think so. "See how his story ENDS!!?? I don't wanna jump to conclusions but they really are gonna kill him aren't they?" one Twitter user wrote. "Ooh #GreysAnatomy is doing a big goodbye for Alex Karev next week. They must be killing him off," speculated another fan. "I bet he never made it to Iowa, died on the way?"
Some fans have other theories as to how the show might be killing him off; in fact, one viewer on Reddit believes that the character is actually keeping a heartbreaking secret about a terminal illness.
"Alex left because he found out he has some terminal illness and didn’t want to die in front of everyone in Seattle. So he leaves saying he’s visiting his mom, but he’s dying on his own," the user wrote. "So next episode, he might be found and that’s how they explain him “ghosting everyone”!"
As for what the Grey's writers have to say on the matter, showrunner Krista Vernoff told Variety that the show has written Alex's exit "as carefully" as they could. "It was a very careful threading of a needle, where we are giving a little bit of information and pain to Jo,” Vernoff explained. "We’re, episode by episode, illuminating the story of where Alex is. And it takes us quite a few more episodes to get there and to give the audience clarity."
So now that we're reaching the end of this said story, will the Grey's Anatomy writers actually do justice for beloved character Dr. Alex Karev? It looks like we'll find out during the special farewell episode, but either way, we're definitely going to need a box (or five) of tissues to get through this one.
