The Metropolitan Police has confirmed that Greta Thunberg has been charged after she was arrested at a London protest.

The 20-year-old was in the capital during the Fossil Free London protest, where she joined other activists outside the InterContinental Hotel on Park Lane, where oil executives were holding a meeting.

Protestors were trying to block the hotel’s entrance.

Fossil Free London's protest was organised for the first day of the three-day Energy Intelligence Forum - formerly called the Oil and Money conference - where bosses of Shell and Total were due to speak.

However, the Met Police had imposed a Section 14 order on the location, which looked to “prevent serious disruption to the community, hotel and guests”.

When the activists did not move, police made a total of 27 arrests. Of that number, 26 have been charged.

Thunberg has been accused of breaching the Section 14 order, with images of her arrest appearing on social media. She has now been released on bail with a trial set for 15 November.

Speaking at the protest, the Swedish climate change activist told other protesters: “Behind these closed doors at the Oil and Money conference, spineless politicians are making deals and compromises with lobbyists from destructive industries - the fossil fuel industry.

“People all over the world are suffering and dying from the consequences of the climate crisis caused by these industries who we allow to meet with our politicians and have privileged access to.

“That is why we have to take direct action to stop this and to kick oily money out of politics.”
