Green-Tastic Juices to Try

If our office refrigerator is any indication, juicing is a practice that’s gone beyond the health nuts. It’s also a practice that’s gone beyond cleansing. Supplement one meal with a juice when you’re feeling the need, or replace your afternoon coffee with an energizing green drink, instead. Point is: You can be loose with your juicing.

Juice bars around the country are cold-pressing locally sourced produce and bottling the results, ensuring that the flavor is as friendly and balanced as the health benefits. The ones we’ve listed below are tried and true for both reasons. So make like us—and some other people at Yahoo—and drink your vegetables.

PORTLAND, OREGON

Kure
Kure’s “Staycation” tastes uber-healthy but also bright and sweet. In other words, it’s so good that, sure, you drink it for the body benefits, but you actually look forward to tasting it. It contains kale, apple, cilantro, and pineapple, and will basically make you feel like you have superpowers.

Portland Juice Press
Parsley is one of the highest sources of chlorophyll, which acts like iron to oxidize the blood. (The herb is New York chef Seamus Mullen’s secret weapon for fighting rheumatoid arthritis.) And you can find a heavy dose of it in Portland Juice Press’s “Dharma,” a drink that also contains kale, spinach, apple and lemon. Find it on the company’s website, along with delivery options in the Portland area.

SAN FRANCISCO

Juice Shop
The very straightforwardly named Juice Shop has five locations in the Bay Area and also delivers its cold-pressed juices seven days week in San Francisco and Marin.  “Liver Green,” our favorite of its offerings, contains celery, cucumber, dandelion greens, lemon, and burdock, a medicinal root that can soothe tummies and ease joint pain.

Project Juice
EZ Green is also easy drinking, thanks to generous amounts of lemon juice and ginger. It also contains apple, celery, cucumber, kale, spinach, romaine, and parsley, meaning this is definitely a meal-replacement juice. Project Juice’s online shop lets you mix it in with any other juice of your choosing to create your own pack of six, plus the company has three brick-and-mortar locations in the Bay Area.

LOS ANGELES

Clover
A full three pounds of produce go into a 16-ounce bottle of Clover’s liquid kale, romaine, cucumber, asparagus, broccoli, celery, parsley, and lemon concoction called Veg’d. This is why we love it. Clover’s juices are currently only sold in L.A., but a trip to one of its three stores there is worth it: They’ve got kombucha on tap and Stumptown coffee.

Moon Juice
We also like Moon Juice’s “Fennel, Frond & Herb,” which contains fennel, basil, cucumber, and green apple, and is meant to tame bloating and headaches. We road-tested that theory after a long West coast night, and can safely say it’s true.

AUSTIN, TEXAS

Daily Greens
Founder Shauna Martin attributes beating breast cancer, in part, to drinking a bottle of green juice every day. Based in Austin, Texas, the Daily Greens products are available at certain natural grocers around the country; just check the website’s store locator to find one near you. There’s also an online shop. As for which one to choose? Vitality is our pick; it contains kale, pineapple, cucumber, cilantro, celery, lime, Himalayan pink salt, and the juice of one small jalapeño pepper, which provides a day’s worth of vitamin C. (Fun fact!)

NEW YORK CITY

Juice Press
Juice Press’s playful product names (Good Weed, Rocket Fuel) make it worth mentioning, but the company also produces a dizzying array of drinkable goodies: 59 juices and 23 smoothies. What’s more, it ships everywhere in the USA. We like “Gravity,” a mild-tasting green juice that contains cucumber, celery, aloe vera leaf, lemon, kale, and e3 live, an algae that is positively teeming with nutrients.

Melvin’s Juice Box
Known as ‘The Juice Guy’ in New York City, Melvin Major Jr. is a legend. Of his juices, the New York Times wrote: “The juices here are more than just liquid multivitamins; they’re carefully constructed compositions with such intense and vivid flavors you will devour them just for the taste.” Agreed. We dig Melvin’s “Body Good," which contains kale, collards, and swiss chard and can be delivered for free within a certain zones of Manhattan.
