DJ Khaled's views on relations with his wife are really controversial

In this week’s dose of unexpected (and unwanted) news, the internet is ablaze over some comments from musician and producer DJ Khaled. During a conversation with “The Breakfast Club,” a radio show, Khaled said that he won’t perform oral sex on his wife — but that he expects it from her, because he’s “the king.”

“You gotta understand, I’m the don. I’m the king,” Khaled said on the radio show. “It’s different rules for men. … We the king, so there’s some things y’all might not wanna do, [but] it gotta get done. I just can’t do what you want me to do. I just can’t.”

Twitter users are calling out the fact that Khaled appears to worship his son, Asahd — but he wouldn’t have his son in the first place if it weren’t for his wife, Nicole Tuck. Some Twitter users also wondered if Khaled would feel differently if he’d had a daughter, rather than a son. It’s important to remember that what sex acts people choose to engage in (or refrain from) are entirely their decisions. While Tuck doesn’t appear to have weighed in on her husband’s statements, people are rightly pointing out that Khaled does seem to be promoting the idea that men deserve something that women don’t.

Some people also suggested that comments like Khaled’s can contribute to self-esteem issues. Too often in our culture, men’s sexual pleasure is valued over women’s, and that idea can be harmful for a number of reasons. Surveys have shown that when it comes to sex, there’s a significant orgasm gap between men and women, with men achieving orgasm more often than women during sex. Comments like Khaled’s could contribute to the divide by suggesting that men deserve more sexual pleasure than women do.

Other people, meanwhile, are just unhappy that Khaled’s comments are a news story in the first place.

And, of course, plenty of people had jokes to share about the news. One person cleverly brought up Janelle Monáe’s recent music video for “Pynk,” which celebrates all things woman-related, including vaginas.

Even ’90s rock band Smash Mouth got in on the discussion.

And Dictionary.com weighed in, suggesting that Khaled’s comments were the very definition of a double standard.

It’s clear that Khaled’s comments struck a nerve with a number of people. He probably would have been better off not sharing his opinion — especially since it seems to encourage preferential treatment of men over women.
