If you're watching the new season of The Great British Baking Show (also known as The Great British Bake Off in the U.K.) right now, you probably have noticed that a very important figure is missing: Noel Fielding's trusty sidekick of three years, Sandi Toksvig.

Alongside judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood, the new cohost of the U.K.-based series is British actor and comedian Matt Lucas, who you may recognize from Bridesmaids (he played Kristen Wiig's character's roommate). While Matt undoubtedly brings his own unique flair to TGBBS, fans want to know why Sandi isn't in the latest installment of the popular baking competition.

Why did Sandi Toksvig leave The Great British Baking Show in 2020?

Simply put, Sandi had other new projects in the works and not enough time to do it all. More specifically, Sandi is now part of the Channel 4 documentary The Write Offs, where she is tasked with helping eight adults who struggle with reading and writing to learn basic literacy, ending with each of them reading a speech that they have written to their loved ones. It's the perfect gig for her, especially given her impressive background in publishing more than 20 fiction and non-fiction books.

Of course, starting a new journey and ending her time on The Great British Baking Show was bittersweet for the beloved cohost. When announcing her departure, Sandi had nothing but thoughtful words to say about her three years on the show.

"When stepping down from a job, it is quite common for people to say they are doing so in order to spend more time with their family. Unusually, I am departing from The Great British Bake Off so I can spend more time with my other work," she said, per Manchester Evening News.

She added: "Spending time with Prue, Paul and Noel has been one of the great pleasures of my life. These are friendships which I know will continue beyond the confines of television."

After The Great British Bake Show broke the news on social media, fans seemed both stunned and heartbroken. "You will be missed sandi!!! 😭😭😭," one fan wrote on an Instagram post announcing Sandi's departure. "I’m not okay 😭," another declared. "Oh no, she and Noel were my absolute favorites 💔," a different fan commented.

Perhaps the most distraught person of all though was Noel, Sandi's fellow cohost on the series. "I feel like Tom without Jerry ! Mick without a Keef :( gonna miss yooooooooooooooooo and the wonderful times we got to play together in the tent ! Double acts are rare and magical beast and working with you was a pleasure x x x all my love Mr Noel x," he wrote on Twitter.

At least we'll always have reruns on Netflix to watch. Thanks for the cheeky jokes and delightful memories, Sandi!
