The deal closed off-market, but records confirm longtime Malibu resident and powerhouse biotech CEO Andrew “Andy” Conrad has sold one of his several lavish homes in the area. Located in the guard-gated Malibu Colony community, this Cape Cod-inspired one went for a hefty $16.5 million — almost quintuple the $3.5 million Conrad paid for the place way back in 1999. The buyers are local winemakers/restaurateurs Salvatore “Sal” Casola and his wife Joan, who have put the place up for rental grabs at a summer lease rate of $150,000 per month.
A veteran geneticist who holds a Ph.D in cell biology from UCLA, Conrad founded National Genetics Institute (NGI) in the 1990s. After selling that facility for $65 million, Conrad joined Google X — Silicon Valley’s most “secretive research lab” — in 2000. And ever since 2015, when Sergey Brin spun out the life sciences unit of Google X into its own company called Verily, Conrad has served as CEO of the semi-mysterious research firm, which operates under the Alphabet Inc. umbrella and boasts a practically unlimited amount of funding.
Now in his mid-50s, Conrad was once married to actress Courtney Thorne-Smith (“Melrose Place,” “Ally McBeal,” “Two and a Half Men”) but is now married to former fashion model Haylynn Cohen, with whom he shares two children. The couple split their time between several homes, among them Malibu’s $10.5 million Sundance Ranch and a multi-acre estate on the Hawaiian island of Lanai.
The Malibu Colony house was originally built in 1957, but has since undergone an expansion and renovation. Today, there are two separate structures — a two-story guesthouse and a two-story main house, with unobstructed ocean views. Tax records say the place packs in just over 2,200 square feet of living space, though it’s not entirely clear if that figure includes both the main house and guesthouse. The grey shingle-sided structures offer a total of four bedrooms and five full bathrooms.
