The Golden Globes Will Serve an Entirely Vegan Menu This Year

As the 77th Golden Globe Awards approach, there’s been the usual buzz about who will take home the coveted gold statuettes. (Will Fleabag win big? We hope so.) This year’s show is especially noteworthy, however, because guests will be served an all-vegan menu for the first time, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association made the decision in the hopes of encouraging people to eat more sustainably. “If there’s a way we can, not change the world, but save the planet, maybe we can get the Golden Globes to send a signal and draw attention to the issue about climate change,” Lorenzo Soria, president of the HFPA, told the Associated Press. “The food we eat, the way we grow the food we eat, the way we dispose of the food is one of the large contributors to the climate crisis.”

The awards show has offered vegetarian options in the past. Last year’s menu featured a vegetarian honeynut squash entrée, served with piquillo pepper hummus, braised rainbow chard, crispy chickpeas, quinoa, golden raisins, and sunflower sprouts—the non-vegetarian main was a Chilean seabass with forbidden black rice, white and green asparagus, globe carrots, crispy herb leaves, and sweet pepper concasse.

While this year’s spread was initially going to include fish too, according to THR, the HFPA called Beverly Hilton executive chef Matthew Morgan a few days before Christmas to talk about a last-minute new menu.

“As long term partners of the HFPA, we are pleased to support their decision to offer an entirely plant-based menu for the 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards. Our talented culinary team is excited to create dynamic plant-based offerings for Hollywood’s best of the best,” Morgan said in a statement provided to Food & Wine.

On awards night, January 5, those “dynamic plant-based offerings” will include a chilled golden beet soup (shown above) for an appetizer, prepared with shaved candy-striped beets, citrus oil, pistachio, micro chervil, and amaranth; the entrée will be “scallops” made from king oyster mushrooms (top image), served with wild-mushroom risotto, roasted baby purple and green brussels sprouts, globe carrots, and pea tendrils. As for dessert? A “Vegan Opera Dome,” with choco brilliance, praline gunaja crumble, caramelized hazelnuts, and passion crispy.

The decision is indicative of a growing trend toward plant-based food. In 2019 alone, several new plant-based burgers hit the market, including Lightlife’s meatless patty and Nestle’s “Awesome Burger”—Impossible Burger also introduced a revamped “2.0” recipe, while the Beyond Burger launched a “meatier” burger complete with faux marbling. Burger King announced its popular Impossible Whopper in April, and Dunkin’ sent its Beyond Sausage Breakfast Sandwich nationwide last November. If the Globes are anything to go by, we can expect the trend to continue well into the new year.

The 77th Golden Globe Awards will air on Sunday, January 5, at 8 p.m. EST.
