God Help Me, There's Footage of 'The Last of Us' Voice Actors Making Clicker Noises

Thanks to HBO's The Last of Us, there's a sweet, new job you can have: making terrifying clicking sounds! Please note, however, that if you ever do this sound in front of me, I will scream. In fact, I haven't been able to leave my bed—and I slept with all the lights on last night—after watching a behind-the-scenes video that shows the voice actors who make the clicker sounds on The Last of Us in action.

Previously, I didn't think that humans were capable of sounding like that. If you watch the video, it really seems like it took getting infected with the cordyceps mushroom fungus for those actors to be able to make those throat noises. But now, I have the misfortune of knowing that you can do it without a big, scary mushroom head. Today, you must know it, too.

The two voice actors in the video—Misty Lee and Phillip Kovats—worked on both the the original video games and the HBO series, according to Polygon. "When I started [recording voices for The Last of Us game], I went into the booth and they were like, 'We’re looking for some sounds,'" Lee explained. "These are some of the creatures in this game we’re working on. We don’t quite know what they sound like… We started experimenting, and I started doing stuff for them. When we happened on the clicking noise, they went, 'Wait a minute. Stop that. Can you change that up? Can you do it over and over and over again?' We just found that sound."

Thus, the clickers—and my endless nightmares—were born. If you need me, I'll be hiding under the covers.
