'GMA Day' co-host Sara Haines met her husband on OkCupid — and he had no idea she was famous

Romantic comedies might have told Sara Haines that she’d meet her “boo at a produce department or tripping on him on a street,” but when she entered her 30s, she came to the realization that she needed to put in some effort to actually find her person.

For the GMA Day co-host, that meant creating an online dating profile on OkCupid, which eventually led her to her now-husband, Max Shifrin.

“Your first interaction with me was, ‘Are you a typical Virgo?’” Haines recounts to Yahoo Lifestyle of her initial conversation with the legal adviser, who admits he had no idea that she was a television host and journalist. “I was like, ‘Are you a chick?’”

Shifrin, however, proved to be persistent when he offered to meet up with Haines that very evening, an offer she quickly took him up on because she looked “super-cute.”

“I went to shake hands, the gentleman that I am, and she went to aggressively hug me,” Shifrin says of the first date, before Haines concedes that she “definitely fell harder and faster” into their relationship.

It wasn’t until about six months into dating that Shifrin really considered that Haines could be the one. And closer to two years in was when he finally proposed — at 6:30 on a random Tuesday morning.

“I didn’t have a big plan, I didn’t have a big production,” Shifrin says of the engagement. “So I literally got up, crawled out of bed in my pajamas and got on one knee on the floor next to the bed. And proposed awkwardly and without much charm at all.” He continues, “I’m sorry you don’t have a better story.” But Haines is quick to assure him that she looks back on it fondly.

Now, the couple has two children, and Haines is taking on her own new venture as the co-host of ABC’s newest daytime show, GMA Day, with Michael Strahan, airing weekdays at 1 p.m.
