Gloria Estefan is starring in the HBO remake of the classic 1991 film, Father of the Bride, but personally, I would like to see a remake of Estefan’s own wedding. The Latin music icon shared the story of her memorable wedding day in an interview, and let me tell you, it has everything. There are comedic, dog-related high jinks. There are drama and sacrifice. There are a surprise twist and a jubilant happy ending. There's true love. This story is begging to be made into a movie.
In 1978, Estefan was preparing to get married to her “one and only boyfriend” Emilio, she told USA Today. But because her father was ill, the couple didn’t plan a big party after their small ceremony, only a visit to her father in the hospital. But then…surprise!
When the newlyweds returned home they found that their friends had put together a surprise reception for them with all the works: catering, cake, deejay, and 200 guests. “It turned into a full-blown party,” the singer and actor said. She wound up getting cake all over her dress, as one does, and ran into the bathroom to change right as the first dance was supposed to start.
“They said, ‘The bride and groom are going to dance’ as I’m in the bathroom with my wedding dress off because there’s cake on the sleeve,” Estefan recalled. “I opened the window and yelled, ‘I’m naked in here, I’m not ready for that song.’ When I did come out, my cocker spaniel ate the wedding dress sleeve for the cake.” This is the best. I love this wedding.
Until someone pitches that family-friendly wedding comedy, we still have the new, Cuban twist on Father of the Bride. Estefan stars alongside Andy Garcia as the parents of the bride (Adria Arjona) parents, who decide not to announce their divorce so as not to spoil the wedding.
