Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery Is Streaming Now

For the first time, a Netflix film made its debut in the U.S.'s three biggest movie theater chains. Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery had a special, one-week-only premiere in theaters for Thanksgiving.

Starring Daniel Craig, Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson, and Dave Bautista, the Knives Out sequel is set on a billionaire's private island in Greece. (The film shot at Amanzoe, in Porto Heli, Greece.)

"I’m over the moon that Netflix has worked with AMC, Regal and Cinemark to get Glass Onion in theaters for this one of a kind sneak preview. These movies are made to thrill audiences, and I can’t wait to feel the energy of the crowd as they experience Glass Onion. Between this and the release on Netflix in December, I'm excited that audiences around the world will be able to enjoy the film!" director Rian Johnson said in a statement.

The movie was in theaters from November 23 through November 29, in approximately 600 theaters in the U.S. and a select few overseas. If you were not able to see the film in person: Do not fear, because the movie dropped on Netflix on December 23, 2022, just in time for the holidays.

Reportedly, Johnson is pushing for Glass Onion to return to theaters after it premieres on Netflix. "Once it's on the service it will be available to theaters and we're exploring what form that can take," Johnson said. "I'll take as much as I can possibly get. But a lot of that has to do with what the theaters are willing to do, what makes sense."

This won't be the last outing of Daniel Craig's southern detective Benoit Blanc, either; a third Knives Out film is already in the works at Netflix.

When the third film comes out, Johnson says he hopes it plays in movie theaters for longer. He shared, "We wanted it to do incredibly well for a lot of reasons. I guess for me, because I really want to show that this can happen and this can be a huge success. And that when it hits the service, people will still turn up and it will be huge on the service. That those two things can complement each other. Because I want more next time. I want more theaters. I want it for longer."
