Following a summer full of parties and late nights, YouTuber Carl Cunard was feeling sluggish and out of shape, even though he was still working out regularly. "Sometimes I feel like I train so hard in the gym five days a week but my body just doesn't change, because alcohol can really affect that," he says. "I go to the gym, I eat clean, but I was always hitting this wall where I'd never take the next step."
As alcohol is full of sugars and tends to have a bloating effect, Cunard decided to cut out booze for a full month to see what kind of effect it would have on his fitness and overall wellbeing.
"I would probably say I was not in the best physique I've ever been in, because I had a whole summer of drinking," he says. "I didn't change my gym routine that much, I didn't change my diet that much. I've always been healthy in my lifestyle."
Despite making minimal changes to his training and nutrition, Cunard very quickly began to see results, most evident in the increased visible definition in his abs. He also started to build more muscle than he had previously been able to achieve. Additionally, there was a noticeable change to his skin. "It felt clearer, smoother... obviously I'm pumping more water into my body."
Just as significant as the changes to his health was the impact that challenge had on his social and working life. "The first event I went to where I didn't drink alcohol, I was a nervous wreck. I was so shy," he says. "It taught me that I had kind of become reliant on alcohol to make me talk to people and have a good time." However, as the month went on, he found that he pleasantly surprised himself with how he was able to exercise his willpower in social situations.
"I've actually really enjoyed doing it, and it's taught me so many lessons," he says. "My head is so much clearer, I'm back into a routine, because I think after summer of partying and drinking, I lost my mojo. I was in a bit of a dark place, my creativity had gone... Doing this month was exactly what I needed."
