Her participation in a Charleston dance competition as a young teen catapulted her career into the spotlight, and shortly thereafter she began performing in Broadway musicals such as Top Speed and Girl Crazy. Her big break came after her role as Anything Annie in the film 42nd St, in which she dazzled audiences alongside Una Merkel with the tune "Shuffle Off to Buffalo." Roughly nine months later, she achieved household name status when she danced alongside the ever-dapper Fred Astaire in the rom-com Flying Down to Rio. Together, the duo starred in 10 films over the course of 16 years, and tapped their way into movie-making history.
