Fall is around the corner, which means it's time for your annual re-watch of Gilmore Girls. And apparently, it's also time to speculate on who the father of Rory's baby is: Jess or Logan. As a reminder, Rory announced her pregnancy at the end of Netflix's A Year in the Life in this iconic bit of dialogue:
Rory: I'm pregnant.
And it turns out Gilmore Girls' costume supervisor Valerie Campbell has been an absolute font of knowledge when it comes to telling fans ~what it all means~. Back in March, Valerie dropped a TikTok revealing that the father of Rory's baby is 100 percent Logan. As she put it, “The only obvious choice is—you guessed it—Logan. And Amy [Sherman-Palladino] herself said, ‘Why are people even questioning who the father is?’ It’s because it was supposed to be very, very, very, very, very obvious.”
Meanwhile, Valerie just dropped another theory into our laps: that Rory was never the one who was supposed to say those iconic last lines of the show—Lorelai was, to her mom.
“I just had this really weird thought,” she said. “What if the final four words, which Amy knew from the very beginning of the show were not meant for Rory to say. Instead, were meant for Lorelei to say. Just think about it: at the end of the Season 8 that we never got to see that Amy would have done, Lorelai would still have been at an age that would have been appropriate for her to have a baby. Also the whole build up of Luke and Lorelai getting together might have happened earlier and might have been something that was more acceptable. It is a family friendly show."
"If Amy had gotten to end the series where she wanted, that might have changed the dynamic," Valerie continued. "After all, I don’t think Amy would have wanted to make Rory pregnant at that age. 23 is really young. Especially in the '90s, most people were off going to college doing career things and making a life for themselves. It actually makes more sense that Lorelai would have been the one saying it.”
Cool, excuse me while I spiral.
