Remember that time Tommy Hilfiger had Gigi Hadid walk in a big leather poncho because she wasn’t “quite as thin” as other models? That’s water under the bridge now, according to her.

ICYMI, Tommy told Yahoo Style, “Our casting director said, ‘She doesn’t really fit because you know she’s not quite as tall as the other girls, she’s not quite as thin.’ So they put a red, white, and blue poncho on her. It covered a lot of her body unfortunately, but it received millions of hits.”

Gigi walked in the oversize outerwear in February 2015 - a little too recently for any body-shaming talk to be considered OK, or just a sad reflection of less-accepting times. People were upset, not to mention confused, because Gigi has a banging body and a seemingly great relationship with Tommy.

That friendship is probably what made Gigi sweep the entire situation under the rug in a new interview. "It's funny because people think that it's something that I wasn't aware of. Back in the day, that would have gone through my mind," she clarified to Access Hollywood. “But I know that when Tommy said it last week, it was in context of a larger story. ... The point of that story was that Tommy was rooting for me and … regardless of what the stylist of that season said or what he put me in, Tommy wanted me in the show. Tommy was pushing for me and Tommy loved my curves.”

The following season, Gigi basically starred in his show, wearing a teeny bikini to boot. He also sweetened the pot with a flashy collab, Tommy x Gigi, which came out in September. “I said, you know, ‘why don’t we ask her to design a line with us?’” Tommy explained to Yahoo. “I said,’Gigi, come design this with me, we’ll do a Gigi x Tommy couture line.’”

Listen, it's great that everything's all peachy between Gigi and Tommy now, but it's also hard to forget that this happened. Body-shaming a model in this day and age is pretty messed up. And it's just plain suspicious that the shift in perspective came after profits rose and likes skyrocketed on Instagram.
