Gigi Goes Long and Hailey Cuts It Short in Americans in Paris Project

The Americans in Paris project, an effort by the CFDA and Vogue that takes a group of young American designers who have participated in the Fashion Fund to Paris for Market Week, is in its 12th season. Yes, that’s right: a full dozen trips. The project provides exposure for the brands to not only international press, but more importantly to buyers for possible store placement. But as is Vogue’s habit, the event has become a bit of a production hosting some pretty important events and gold star talent. This year that talent included Gigi Hadid and Hailey Baldwin.

Though she played photographer for her boyfriend, Zayn Malik, on his Versus Versace campaign, Gigi Hadid played host to the event’s opening cocktail reception. Having attended for the last few years (last year, her good friend Kendall Jenner was a host), this was no new rodeo for the Vogue Arabia cover star. While Malik opted for a hoodie and leather pant (his look came courtesy of program participant Rochambeau), Hadid went long, donning a gingham dress made by designer Adam Selman.

As a runner-up to winning the last iteration of the Fashion Fund, the New York-based brand is a buzzy one counting Rihanna as an ardent celebrity supporter — we all remember that nude dress moment at the CFDA Awards. For this important fashion night though, all eyes were on Hadid in the floor skimming shirt dress and boxer short that came cinched in at the waist with a belt and styled with over-the-knee boots, courtesy of stylist Monica Rose. But her friend, Hailey Baldwin had a completely different look in mind.

If you’re in Paris why not go couture? Though Hadid may have been strongly encouraged to stay American to underscore the event’s aim, Baldwin was in no way under the same sort of restrictions. For her look she tapped Alexandre Vauthier — and couture no less

Coming from the designer’s spring 2017 collection, the look featured an extra-short skirt and a cutout thunderbolt-esque slash wrapping around the full dress. Shoulderless, the little black dress showed off a lot of skin, some of which was covered by the lush black fur coat that stylist Maeve Reilly chose to pair with it instead of the feathered look it was shown with on the runway. The coat too, as well as the simple black and white heels, was Vauthier’s creation.

Where the two converged in looks was in the earrings and hair. Both wore oversize simple hoops, Hadid’s in silver by Jennifer Fisher. Those were put on view by the updos styled for both models by Jen Atkin, founder of the popular site Mane Addicts.
