How to Gift-Wrap Their Favorite Bottle
It’s gifting season! And of course, a bottle of quality spirits you know they love is always a fantastic choice. But when it comes time to start gift-wrapping, those bottles can present a real challenge, since they don’t generally come in perfect rectangular or square shapes. So we partnered with some of the classics—Johnnie Walker, Ketel One, Crown Royal, and Don Julio—to share our top tips for ensuring the outside of your present delights the eye just as much as the inside will delight the palate. (And while we’re on the subject of holiday cheer, don’t forget to take a cocktail break for yourself while wrapping. We’re partial to an Old Fashioned for the occasion.) Read on and watch above for our no-fail steps to wrapping your favorite spirit.
Choose A Motif
If you ask us, paper choice is essential. Take inspiration from the bottle you’re gifting. We like to select wrapping paper that complements what’s inside. For Johnnie Walker Black, say, find a lovely, rich black paper that alludes to the brand’s label distinction, and then look for ribbons and other gold accents. For Crown Royal, choose a paper that echoes the color of the liquid inside, then accessorize with pops of purple.
Prep Your Paper
On a flat, clean surface, lay out your wrapping: tissue, holiday wrapping, and swaths of velvety fabric are some of our favorites. Place the bottle on the wrapping with the label facing up and cut it to size: Just as you would for a box, try to approximate four times the width of the bottle for your wrapping, and make it six inches taller than the bottle.
Let’s Get Wrapping
Arrange the bottle on the wrapping, leaving more space at the top than the bottom. (This will help when it comes time to decorate.) Fold the paper up over the sides of the bottle, overlapping the ends, and secure it in place with double-sided tape. With the seam facing up, fold the paper at the base of the bottle and secure with tape to create a neat closure.
The Final Flourish
Set the enclosed bottle upright on your work surface. Fluff up the wrapping at the top of the bottle and form a bow around the neck with your ribbon of choice. Carefully curl the ribbon using a scissor, and voilà! A perfectly wrapped bottle, just waiting to be gifted.
