Giants signed Bobby McCain signed to play safety
The New York Giants brought in Bobby McCain from the rival Washington Commanders to play safety.
McCain will be replacing Julian Love, who started 32 games at safety for New York over the last four years recording 291 tackles and five interceptions.
McCain is a tenured veteran in the league who has played all over the defensive backfield. However, when he comes to East Rutherford he will be playing exclusively safety.
“I’ll be playing safety here. I’ll be looking to be the guy. I’m coming here to play. I’m coming here to compete. And I’m coming here to win,” McCain told reporters on Thursday.
Over the last four seasons, McCain transitioned to safety where he started in 55 games for the Miami Dolphins and Commanders, recording 159 solo tackles, 22 passes defended, and seven interceptions.
However, Washington moved McCain to slot cornerback last season and many felt he excelled at the position.
McCain will be joining a New York defense that outperformed expectations in 2022. He will pair up with safety Xavier McKinney, who McCain is excited to play with. He thinks the duo will be able to play well with one another and form a lasting connection.
“There are things that we can both help each other with — whether it’s via on the field, via off the field. I know he’s a really good player,” McCain said. “He’s going to continue being a good player in this league. And just us being able to communicate, we’ve already been in contact and been in touch. And us being able to communicate will help each other and it’ll help us go a long way.”
