  • Giacomo says season 17 might include COVID-19 and Black Lives Matter storylines.

Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital is accepting patients again. After Grey’s Anatomy paused production and cut season 16 short, we finally have details about the next season. According to Giacomo Gianniotti (who plays Andrew DeLuca), season 17 might include interesting storylines inspired by recent 2020 events.

“There’s been no shortage of incredible stories that have been going around this time, both in the hospital walls and in the streets of cities protesting,” he told Entertainment Tonight. “So we hope to tell all those stories this season.” Giacomo doesn’t know any specifics since he hasn’t received new scripts, but in true Grey’s fashion, he thinks the new season will be inspired by real events.

He added that he’s “just speculating at this point,” but that “the writers and producers have said they’re really interested in telling the stories of everything that has been going on with the Black Lives Matter movement.”

Showrunner Krista Vernoff already revealed that they’re working on storylines for the upcoming season even though they haven’t resumed filming yet. Season 16 ended rather abruptly after Meredith Grey (played by Ellen Pompeo) found DeLuca having another bipolar episode and took him home.

Fans are waiting to see what happened after she took him home, but they probably won’t find that out immediately. “We’re going to start the season about a month and a half [into] full COVID, so it’s going to take place a little beyond where we left off in the last season,” Giacomo explained. “We might have some flashbacks. We might have some things where we’re referencing last season, just to have context leading up. But we are going to have a little leap when we start this season in terms of time. We’re not picking up right where we left off.”

“Little leap,” he says. That sounds vague, but Grey’s is known for shocking its viewers. After a cut LVAD wire, a secret wife, a hospital shooting, a plane crash, and a dead Derek, nothing surprises us anymore.
