I’ve been a huge fan of 21-year-old Saoirse Ronan since her Oscar-nominated performance in Atonement and watched as she’s grown into a versatile actress (from The Lovely Bones to The Host to The Grand Budapest Hotel) who walks the red carpet with style and confidence. Last night, Ronan looked especially beautiful at the Los Angeles premiere of her new historical period drama, Brooklyn. (See it in theaters November 6 — there’s already Oscar buzz for Ronan!) Her soft makeup and graphic cat eye are totally up my alley, so I reached out to Ronan’s makeup artist, the incredibly talented Mai Quynh, to find out exactly how she created the look.

“The cream jumpsuit looked young and cool on Saoirse, so we wanted to do nude makeup everywhere,” says Quynh of Ronan’s modern red carpet look. “I thought by adding the winged black eyeliner, it would give the jumpsuit an edge… [and] would be the perfect amount of drama for the night.” When heading out to a major event, Quynh says it’s important to step back and examine the look as a whole. “The hair was sleek and pulled back, and a gold barrette was added to the back knot to complement the gold earrings. I think the hair and makeup complemented the look very well.”

To perfect Ronan’s skin, Quynh prepped her canvas with Chanel La Solution 10 De Chanel Sensitive Skin Cream ($80), followed by Chanel Perfection Lumière Foundation Long-Wear Flawless Fluid Sunscreen Makeup Broad Spectrum SPF 15 in in 12 Beige Rosé ($58) for a luminous look. Next, the makeup artist set her face with Chanel Natural Finish Loose Powder in 20 Clair ($45). “I added dimension to her face by brushing on Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sheer Color SPF 15 in N°20 ($58) to her forehead, and underneath her cheekbones,” says Quynh. “I dusted Chanel Powder Blush in In Love ($45) to the apples of her cheeks.”

Now for the really fun part. “For her eyes, I applied a bold winged eyeliner using Chanel Écriture de Chanel Eyeliner Pen in Noir ($35),” says Quynh. The marker-like eyeliner makes drawing the perfect winged flick a cinch, even for amateurs like me. “I kept the rest of her eyes bare, so that the eyeliner was the main focus.” This is key — you don’t want any colorful shadow detracting from the graphic liner. Quynh completed Ronan’s eyes with two coats of Chanel Inimitable Intense Mascara in Noir ($32) only to her top lashes. This also helped maintain the focus on the top lid.

If you’re interested in copying Ronan’s natural pink lipstick, you can pick up a tube of Chanel Rouge Coco Ultra Hydrating Lip Colour in Adrienne ($36). The formula is ultra-hydrating, and definitely the perfect complement to this simple, but high-impact premiere look.
