How one influencer created the 'perfect fall outfit' for less than $100
Kennedy Johnson is only 27, but she has already amassed a significant following on YouTube and Instagram. Fans love her for spilling her natural-hair beauty secrets and they fall for her Atlanta-meets-New York style.
Johnson may be fresh to the New York scene, but she has quickly adapted to the commuter lifestyle and harsh northern weather conditions. Her style is best described as “comfy cute,” Johnson tells Yahoo Lifestyle, adding: “I can’t do jeans two days in a row, my legs itch. … Back in the day, I was trying to show [my] body off all the time, and now I’m just very comfortable with wearing things that represent how I’m feeling that day.”
It’s all about maintaining a balance for Johnson, who says, “I’ll have an oversized sweatshirt, I’ll put on some really cute skinny jeans … [and] if I’m going to do tight at the top, it’s big at the bottom.”
For Yahoo Lifestyle’s #MyStyle video series, which you can watch at the top of the page, Johnson’s perfect fall outfit is one you can easily copy too. First, she suggests pulling on one great outerwear piece; in her case, a timeless plaid blazer. For the dropping temperatures, add a cozy knit turtleneck. For bottoms, Johnson suggests a pair of high-waisted jeans (tight on top and loose on the bottom to keep with her “comfy-cute” motto).
Finally, the cherry on top is a fantastic statement shoe. For Johnson, that means a shiny, bright, silver metallic heeled bootie. She says it adds a bit of “razzle-dazzle” and a “surprise factor” to her look. After all, fall outfits tend to draw on a drab neutral color palette: browns, blacks, and grays. It’s important to add something “bright” to the mix, says Johnson.
When it comes to shopping, she can’t resist Uniqlo. “I’m obsessed with Uniqlo,” she says. “It’s necessary when we’re talking about [the] fall season because you need your basics. Uniqlo is at the top of my list.” Additional favorites include Nordstrom Rack, where she scored her dazzling Schutz metallic booties (at a discount!). But one of Johnson’s key style tricks is spending time scouring thrift shops — all with a plan, of course. Before heading in, she reminds herself: “Think of an outfit that you’re trying to put together and shop for that outfit because if I don’t, I will be in there forever buying everything.”
