Germany transfers another critical IRIS-T air defense system to Ukraine

The system is the second of four that Germany promised to give to Ukraine.

Additional IRIS-T SLM missiles were delivered as part of Germany’s military aid.

Germany handed over the first out of the four pledged IRIS-T air defense systems to the Ukrainian Armed Forces on Oct. 11, 2022.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Oct. 24 that Germany would hand over three more IRIS-T systems to Ukraine as soon as possible. Prior to that, then-German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht stated that Kyiv would receive three more IRIS-T air defense systems in 2023.

Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson, Yuriy Ihnat, said in October that Ukraine was delighted with the results of the first IRIS-T, saying the system “shows 100% effectiveness.”

The German government announced on April 18, 2023, that a new military aid package had been delivered to Ukraine, which included the Patriot anti-aircraft missile system and shells for it.
