Ritchie Torres is running for the U.S House —and is facing a virulently anti-LGBTQ+ Democrat.
“I am running for Congress. If elected, I would be the first LGBTQ member of the New York congressional delegation, the first Latino LGBTQ congressman in the United States, the first Black LGBTQ congressperson in the United States, and I’m running in the South Bronx against a Trump Republican masquerading as a Democrat,” he stated.
Rubén Díaz Sr. is a New York City Council member and former New York state senator. The Democrat is a pastor who’s against abortion and same-sex marriage. He once compared the pro-choice movement to Hitler and the Holocaust, stated, “Hitler was pro-choice. He chose to send the Jews to Auschwitz. That was not their choice that was Hitler’s choice.”
Torres, a fellow council member repping the Bronx, has called Díaz out on his views and remarks in the past, and the two are now running against each other for a seat in the House of Representatives.
“My own lived experience is what inspired me to go into politics,” he explained. “The federal government could be the strongest force for social justice. Most of the policies affecting higher education, health care, housing, social services, are set at the federal level.”
