'Game of Thrones' composer reveals why he can't preview Season 8 music during live concerts
Orchestral performances don’t typically receive raucous cheers, chants, and boos, but Ramin Djawadi is eating it all up.
For the second straight year, the Emmy-nominated composer of HBO’s monster hit Game of Thrones is taking his show on the road with the Game of Thrones Live Concert Experience, a symphonic musical spectacle that incorporates sequences from the show, pyrotechnics, and other flourishes — and is attracting some very vocal fans.
“The audience really gets into it: When they see their favorite character on screen, they start yelling, or [if they see] their favorite villain, they start booing,” Djawadi told Yahoo Entertainment (watch above). “I see the orchestra in front of me, and everybody has a smile on their face. It just makes it fun.”
The inaugural 2017 tour was launched at the suggestion of the series’ creators, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, and Djawadi says the 2018 edition, which kicks off this week, is updated with music from Season 7.
Just don’t expected any teases from the show’s upcoming final season, which is in production and scheduled to premiere in 2019.
“It hasn’t even been written at this point,” Djawadi said. “People don’t know, but I don’t come into the process until fairly late, once they start shooting and once they get into post-production and actually have episodes assembled to a certain degree that I can actually start working on. That’s when I come in. But when exactly that will be, I don’t know.”
With the Live Concert Experience and his work on shows like GoT and Westworld, Djawadi, 44, is following in the steps of other well-known composers, like John Williams and Hans Zimmer, who continue to bring classical music to wider audiences through the medium of mainstream film and television.
“In film music, we use orchestral music heavily … and I think that’s a good thing,” he said. “It will evolve and it always has evolved, that genre. … It opens it up to a broader audience. People will say, ‘Oh, I don’t listen to classical music.’ But by watching movies, they’re listening to orchestral music and enjoying it.”
The Game of Thrones Live Concert Experience kicks off its 2018 North American tour in Seattle on Sept. 6.
