Galápagos Tortoises Return Home After Saving Species in Breeding Program

These Galápagos tortoises are finally returning home after spending years in a breeding program to save their species from extinction.

In US news and current events today, 15 giant tortoises have been living in captivity for nearly 80 years as generations of researchers tried to save their species. According to local researchers, the use of the 15 animals was the only thing that saved the giant tortoises from extinction. Some of the tortoises are upwards of 100-years old including the now-famous Diego, who retired from breeding earlier this year after siring hundreds and hundreds of offspring.
