Oscar nominee Gabourey Sidibe is making the most out of 2020. She directed two public service announcements to help get out the vote, built a gym in her backyard, and adopted a three-month-old kitten, Derrell Jermaine Dupree Sidibe-Frankel, with her boyfriend, Brandon. Together with Derrell's older brother, Aaron Purr Sir, the family of four is definitely staying busy. “Having two cats is like having seven,” Sidibe says with a laugh.
In fact, as Sidibe does press for her new film, Antebellum, out on September 18, her cats are by her side. “Right now Aaron is sleeping on top of the cat condo but Derrell just jumped up, so now Aaron's mad and I will have to move Derrell. But they're friends! They love each other," she says.
You'd think furry friends would be a distraction for Sidibe when talking about the difficult subject matters in Antebellum, a psychological horror thriller also starring Janelle Monáe. But her part in the film is actually lighthearted. Her character, Dawn, brings a levity to the movie that serves as a respite from the much heavier scenes. (“The audience needs those moments,” she says. “It’s like an oasis, like, ‘God, we’re safe,’ where you can forget about the other stuff. It’s a good breather.”)
Dawn was also meaningful for Sidibe on a personal level, because she aspires to be like her. “She doesn't take anything from anyone and demands proper service. Even the guy who wants to buy her a drink…she's had millions of free drinks, so it means nothing to her,” Sidibe says. “She lets him know the proper way to get her attention, saying, ‘I will definitely bone you, but you gotta get your manners up.’ I just was like, ‘That’s an incredible woman. That’s exactly what I want.’”
Speaking of wants: We challenged Sidibe to a round of Fave's Faves, where she opened up about the eye shadow palette she swears by, the sex toy her cat is obsessed with (no, really), and so much more. Read on.
The sex toy that my cat loves to play with:
I’m constantly buying Aaron and Derrell things they do not need. I just bought them a new cat condo tree, but it looks like a book shelf and it's furry. Aaron’s favorite treats are the chicken and waffles flavor. He goes crazy for them. And Derrell really likes straight deli turkey. And Aaron loves the Savage x Fenty's—the lingerie line by Rihanna—kitty whip. It's purple, and I guess it’s for sex, but I’ve never used it. Fenty sent it to me, and it's Aaron who goes crazy for it. He loves it so much. He’ll pick it up in his mouth and move it, and then chase it and bite it and scratch at it.
$23.00, Savage x Fenty
The workout attire that puts me in a good mood:
I built a gym in my backyard, but I still like to wear a cute outfit. I mean, working out sucks and is not the most fun thing in the world, but as long as I have a cute outfit, I feel like that helps. I get a lot of stuff from Torrid, like matching sets. I love the colors. Lola Getts is another place I get a lot of my workout pants and tops. And because I sweat a lot when I box, I use these gym wrap headbands, which my friend Nicole Ari Parker created. All the sweat gets trapped in there, so it doesn't get into my eyes. And my purple boxing gloves are from Amazon. Purple is my favorite color, so I love coordinating everything from my sports bras to my water bottle.
My favorite skin-care splurge:
I’ve been getting into my skin-care routine, and Pholk has a bunch of stuff I love, including a honeysuckle rose face mist that smells delicious. I spray it in the morning and in the night. They also have a beautiful beauty balm in Moroccan rose, and I slather my face with it. For fancier stuff, I go with Sephora's brand. I love their moisturizer.
$20.00, Pholk Beauty
The foundation and eye shadows that I swear by:
Whenever I do my own makeup, I use Bobbi Brown a lot because it matches my skin color and I like the stick, which I use mainly as a concealer with a little powder. And my eye shadows are all Pat McGrath Labs. They are gorgeous, vibrant colors that I love so much.
$49.00, Bobbi Brown
$125.00, Pat McGrath Labs
My lip balm, lip stick, and lip gloss routine:
I start with Sugar lip balm. It just makes my lips feel like a baby’s skin. Then for lipstick, I love MatteTrance by Pat McGrath as well as Fenty Beauty's Hot Chocolit gloss bomb lip luminizer. Sometimes I'll put Nars's Greek Holiday lip gloss over it or Anastasia Beverly Hills’s Maple lip gloss too. The packaging is so gorgeous and beautiful.
$24.00, Fresh Beauty
$19.00, Fenty Beauty
$16.00, Anastasia Beverly Hills
My go-to face masks and eye patches:
I’ve been using Kaike's marshmallow clay powder facial mask quite a bit on my face. It comes powdered, but you can mix it with water and slather it on. I also use Natural Solutions Anti-Aging 24k Gold Eye Mask. I like making my boyfriend do it so we’re twins.
The T-shirts I’m wearing before Election Day:
I’ve been wearing my Breonna Taylor T-shirt quite a bit. I just got a Spread the Vote T-shirt too, because I directed two PSAs for Spread the Vote, so they sent me T-shirts and a hat, which is really cute. I love the Phenomenal Woman T-shirts. There’s a Phenomenal Voter one too.
$35.00, Phenomenal Woman
The blanket and candle I love for fall:
I have a Chanasya wolf combo blanket and the front is soft faux fur and back is soft sherpa. I woke up at 1 a.m.. today for some reason and didn’t want to disturb the cats, so I went and laid on the couch with the blanket, which is my fall blanket. And then for candles, I like Aubert & Amandine's Sandalwood Jasmine candle a lot.
$22.00, Aubert and Amandine
The TV show I highly recommend:
I just watched all of Netflix's Teenage Bounty Hunters and I loved it. It was so cute and just a really fun, smart show that made me smile a lot. I finished it yesterday, so now I’m on the hunt for a new show.
Sidibe can currently be seen in Antebellum, available on demand September 18.
