The special is slated to tape on September 10, the actual 30th anniversary of the series, and will air around Thanksgiving. So many of your favorite cast members are coming together for this special, including Will Smith, Tatyana Ali, Karyn Parsons, Joseph Marcell, Daphne Maxwell Reid, Alfonso Ribeiro, and DJ Jazzy Jeff. A press release also teases “special surprise guests,” so more costars may be popping up as well.
Talk of a traditional Fresh Prince of Bel-Air revival has been swirling for years. “I’d have to be Uncle Phil in that one,” Smith said in 2017 when asked about rebooting the popular show, which ran for six seasons and 148 episodes on NBC. “I’m about to be 50, you know. Like, ‘Come on, Aunt Viv, I’m 50, I can’t go out on my own?’
“It was my very first role, and I was very, very focused on being successful, so I learned the whole script and everyone else’s lines…. If you watch the first four or five episodes, you can see I’m mouthing other people’s lines,” Smith also said about the show. “It’s terrible and I can’t bear to watch it.”
That being said, a different kind of reboot of the show is happening. Will Smith is helming a revival that will imagine Fresh Prince as an intense drama. It’s based on this viral “trailer” Morgan Cooper posted in March 2019.
In an unearthed E! News interview Smith did for Fresh Prince back in 1990, he says, “You can’t find nothing else that will make you feel the way this show makes you feel. I mean, you’re sitting down to watch it, you’re hype, it makes you laugh sometimes, it’ll make you cry. You just got to peep it because it”s all that.”
Thanksgiving cannot come soon enough. Until then, all seasons of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air are streaming on HBO Max.
