  • Rogue City, a new French action thriller, recently dropped on Netflix.

  • The film follows a rivalry between cops and gangs in the city of Marseille.

  • The flick was, in fact, filmed true to its story's said location.

If you dig crime thrillers but haven’t been clued into the new French movie Rogue City streaming on Netflix, it might be time to whet your appetite. Even with subtitles, the film has captured the imagination of American fans of hard-boiled police procedurals and gangster dramas alike, not least of all because it stars an MVP of those genres in Jean Reno (you may know him as Léon from the Luc Besson-directed ‘90s classic The Professional). But where did all the stunts and fictional bullet fights go down?

Rogue City is true to its French roots. As Variety reported, the movie—which is set in Marseille—was indeed shot on location in the south of France around that city. With a $13 million budget and made by the French studio Gaumont, the movie is stacked with talent even aside from Reno (you also probably know him from Ronin and the original Tom Cruise-starring Mission: Impossible movie), though he is certainly a highlight. The Hollywood-famous actor plays a cop going after gangs with his own extralegal methods. The setup has him investigating a shooting at a local nightclub, while a longtime rival also looks into the event.

The cast is rounded out by Lannick Gautry, Stanislas Merhar, and David Belle. The director Olivier Marchal, who is himself a former police officer and member of French intelligence, brought his hard-hitting action bona fides (A Gang Story, 36th Precinct) to helm the production, and Alain Figlarz of Taken 3 coordinated the stunts.

If rivaling police plus rivaling gangs in one movie sounds like a good time, you’ll probably want to queue up Rogue City—crank the volume for maximum gunshot-simulating effect.
