The new core four finally made its official debut in Netflix's Freeridge. The On My Block spin-off follows a group of four friends after they uncover a mysterious box and unearth a streak of bad luck. Gloria Salazar heads the pack of teens as they join forces to reverse the curse before it strikes with unfathomable consequences. The new core four is rounded up with Gloria's younger sister Ines and her besties, Demi and Cameron. Their relationships go through tons of ups and downs as they work to turn their luck around, all the while being students in high school. The eight-episode premiere season spilled tons of tea and featured OMB Easter eggs that have fueled questions from viewers who want to know how the season ended. Read ahead to find out everything about how Freeridge ended its first season.
Is Marisol, aka Abuelita, from On My Block back from the dead?
This is one of the biggest Easter eggs connecting Freeridge to On My Block. In the first episode, Geny and Ruben Martinez, aka Ruby's parents from OMB, sell Cameron a box at a yard sale. Shortly after Cam's purchase, a mysterious woman appears and asks to purchase the box from Cameron for way more $$$ than he paid for it.
Once the friends opened the box and discovered a picture of a woman, the new core four asked Geny who the mysterious woman was and was stunned when she revealed that the woman in the picture is Marisol "Abuelita" Martinez from OMB and she had passed. The friends automatically got spooked and thought they had been encountering an IRL ghost. However, in episode three, Demi found a note confirming that the mysterious woman's name was Mariluna, not Marisol.
Who is Mariluna on Freeridge?
Mariluna is the twin sister of Marisol, aka Ruby's Abeulita from OMB. Gloria ultimately formed a close relationship with Mariluna. What started out as a conversation to confront Mariluna ended with the mysterious woman revealing that she was super close to her twin but was forced to stop communicating with her after she married a wealthy man named Harry Fordman. According to Mariluna, she sent the box to Marisol as a sign that she was still thinking of her.
Was the box cursed?
The mysterious box was a standout element in Freeridge. While Gloria initially believed the package was cursed, Mariluna set the record straight. According to Mariluna, she and her twin sister would prank people by telling them things were cursed. While Mariluna and Marisol laughed at the inside joke and people's reaction to it, outsiders, like the new core four, were oblivious and rightfully spooked.
Demi and Ines took their questions about curses to a psychic who informed them that the only true curse was one they believed in, and whenever they'd stop believing the box was cursed it would stop being cursed.
Did Gloria find out the truth about Rusty?
Cameron, Ines, and Demi kept a massive secret from Gloria throughout the season. Things came to a head right before the core four sat down to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner. The trio was whispering about whether or not they would tell Gloria the truth when she popped into Mariluna's study and asked what they were discussing. Cameron and Demi tried to deflect and change the subject, but Ines told her big sister that Rusty was an actor hired by her uncle to distract her. Gloria didn't believe her sister and said some extremely hurtful things about Ines' role in their late mother's death. The situation went from bad to worse after Gloria confronted Rusty at the dinner table. He admitted to accepting the position but revealed that he stopped taking money once his feelings for her advanced.
After talking it over with Mariluna, Gloria realized that she had overreacted and came outside to apologize to her sister and Rusty. Moments before Gloria apologized, Rusty and Ines shared a kiss, possibly proving that they still had feelings for each other. Sadly, Gloria didn't catch them in the act.
Did Mariluna really die?
Sad news. It appears as though Mariluna did die in Freeridge season 1. Before her death, she proposed writing Gloria and her friends each a check for $1 million. It came with stipulations, though. If they agreed, they'd be able to spend the money right away or opt in for another, more lucrative option. Mariluna said that she would give each of the friends $1 million to spend over the course of three months, but they couldn't purchase anything that they could keep long-term. If they manage to spend the money, they would win $10 million. Before Gloria could decide which option she would pick, Mariluna was called to walk out her estranged family members when she realized that she had left holiday balloons in the car.
As she sat in the driver's seat of her car to remove balloons from her backseat, she was approached by Joker and Sad Eyes, who mistakenly thought Mariluna was Marisol. Both men assumed that she had faked her death and began questioning her about the Rollerword money. Mariluna let them know they were mistaking her for her late sister, but they didn't believe her. She pulled out a gun and pointed it at them, causing visibly frustrated Joker and Sad Eyes to reveal that they were carrying guns too.
The episode cuts back to the core four in Mariluna's office, where they discuss which one of Mariluna's propositions they would take. Out of nowhere, a gunshot erupted, and the camera panned back to Mariluna's front yard, where viewers watched as Joker and Sad Eyes ran away from Mariluna, who appeared to be slumped over in her car, presumably dead.
Did Ines and Gloria's dad Javier die in Freeridge?
Throughout season one of Freeridge, Ines and Gloria's dad was diagnosed with cancer and began seeking treatment, but fortunately, he did not die in the season 1 finale. However, his cancer progressed. During his last appearance in the finale episode, Javier told Ines that he was nauseous when she called to check in on him during Thanksgiving dinner. Although his daughters were worried, Javier appeared to have made it out of the first season alive.
Did Cam and Demi Break Up?
Demi and Cam realized that their relationship was the cause of his premonition, so they decided to break up in one of the sweetest, most amicable breakups ever. They agreed to end their relationship and go back to being just friends. Sadly, after their split, Demi had a change of heart and realized that Cam was her soulmate, but she never let him know. Hopefully, these two can give love another try if the show is renewed for season two.
