Break out the sherry! The long-rumoured revival of hit sitcom Frasier has been announced - 17 years after the show finished its run. The reboot will air on new streaming service Paramount+, with Kelsey Grammer reprising his role as the fastidious radio psychiatrist.

“Having spent over 20 years of my creative life on the Paramount lot, both producing shows and performing in several, I’d like to congratulate Paramount+ on its entry into the streaming world,” said Grammer. “I gleefully anticipate sharing the next chapter in the continuing journey of Dr Frasier Crane.”

David Stapf, president of CBS Studios, commented: “Frasier is one of the most acclaimed comedies in modern television history.” He added: “There has long been a call from fans for its return, and that call is now answered.”

The character of Frasier first appeared in Cheers, before getting his own spin-off show in 1993. The sitcom was enormously successful, racking up 37 Emmy Awards over 11 series.

The show began with Grammer’s pedantic shrink moving home to Seattle to care for his retired policeman father, Martin Crane, played by John Mahoney. The actor passed away in 2018, following a long battle with throat cancer. Speaking to James Corden in 2019, Grammer said they would probably deal with Martin’s death “a little bit” in the revival, “with ‘Dad’ being gone.”

It’s not yet confirmed which of the other core cast members will return. They include David Hyde Pierce, who played Frasier’s fussy brother Niles, Jane Leeves as British housekeeper Daphne (and, in the later years, Niles’s wife), and Peri Gilpin as Frasier’s caustic producer Roz.

It’s likely that at least some, if not all, will reprise their roles too. Grammer previously suggested to Corden that it would be “a different story” but with the “same group of characters.”

However, since the series ended with Frasier moving away to Chicago, we might see a new setting entirely - or he could return to Seattle, and to his old berth in radio. Or, in this new world, perhaps a podcast instead.
